ABSTRACT

The Italian Navy’s training vessel “Amerigo Vespucci” was designed in 1930 as a tall ship in order to maintain alive the old sea traditions, being equipped with three masts and a global sail area of about 2800 m2. After about eighty years of service, in consideration of the particular and important role played by this vessel for the training of the Italian Navy officers, it was decided to proceed to a complete platform system revamping, in order to allow the ship to perform again a new and long operative life. In particular, the propulsion and generation system retrofitting, currently in progress, will combine tradition, represented by the sailing propulsion, and at the same time innovation, since the ship will be equipped with the most innovative IFEP plant (Integrated Full Electric Propulsion) of the overall Italian Navy fleet.
