ABSTRACT

In the last chapter, we described some basic techniques for making inferences about different population parameters using sample statistics. However, there may be occasions when we are interested in determining whether two or more variables are related to each other. For instance, suppose we want to determine whether there is a relationship between a student’s high school mathematics ability and how well he or she does during his or her first year of college. One way to quantify such a relationship could be to look at whether the score a student receives on the mathematics portion of the SAT, which students take when they are in high school, is related to his or her first-year college grade point average.
