ABSTRACT

For sustaining the central role of water in societies, it should be managed to increase the water productive impact while protecting aquatic ecosystems, which are crucial for the environment. This could be achieved by developing the needed infrastructure with legal and institutional frameworks for integrated urban water management. Development and management of urban water can be done by a stock of facilities and installations called “urban water infrastructure”; this includes supply, delivery, treatment, and distribution of water (water mains) to its end users and also collection, removal, treatment, and disposal of sewage and wastewater. The objective of this chapter is to discuss urban water infrastructure and how to maintain the structural integrity of its components, with special attention to water mains.
