ABSTRACT

Urban water demand management (UWDM) is a key strategy for achieving the MDGs for supplying potable water and sanitation for all the people in an urban area. In a national arena, IWRM strategies and water efficiency plans should be developed before implementing UWDM strategies. A balanced set of objectives of UWDM for the management and allocation of water resources are efficiency, equity, and sustainability. Successful implementation of UWDM as a component of IWRM plays a significant role in the reduction of poverty in society through more efficient and equitable use of the available water resources and by facilitating water service through municipal water supply agencies in a region.
