ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we will review state-of-the-art transcoding algorithms and systems architecture. In the first section, we will discuss the general concept of transcoding and its applications. The applications scenarios of transcoding will be studied in detail without descriptions on the specific techniques or algorithms. The second section will be focused on the various functionalities of a transcoder, and the third section will describe techniques to achieve those functionalities. The optimization of each technique will be studied in the next chapter.
