ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will focus on the optimization of video transcoder performance. The performance of a video transcoder can be evaluated from several aspects, such as implementation complexity, dynamic range of bit rate, subjective visual quality, types of formats it can support, and the quality of service. An ideal video transcoder should have very low complexity, wide dynamic bit rate range, and superior visual quality. Such a transcoder should support multiple formats seamlessly. To optimize the performance of transcoder, there is a vast literature to address these issues. We will review recent important results categorically based on the functions of the transcoder.
