ABSTRACT

This appendix provides a brief review of group theory. Section A.l defines a group, then presents some useful developments of this key idea. Section A.2 considers the action of a group on a set, including the important case where the group acts on itself. Finally, Section A.3 discusses the mapping of one group to another. This leads to the idea of a homomorphism and to a statement of the Fundamental Homomorphism Theorem. The material in this appendix is standard and can be found in any good text on group theory. Refs. [1] and [2] are aimed at a more mathematically oriented reader, while Refs. [3-7] are well-known presentations aimed at physicists and chemists. Note that the theorems in this appendix will be stated without proof. In all cases, proofs can be found in Refs. [1] and/or [2].
