ABSTRACT

Recall from Section 6.2 that the first mention of resolvable designs is the question posed by the Reverend Thomas Kirkman [90] in 1850: “Fifteen young ladies in a school walk out three abreast for seven days in succession: it is required to arrange them daily, so that no two shall walk twice abreast.” Kirkman [91] later showed that a solution exists, and gave another single answer by four of the readers of the Lady’s and Gentleman’s Diary.
