ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we examine the main properties of the photon that will be used in subsequent discussions. Starting from the classical Maxwell’s equations and a discussion of gauge transformations, the wave function, polarizations, and propagator of the photon are developed. A complication in specifying the polarization states and propagator arises from the massless nature of the photon and gauge invariance.
