ABSTRACT
In granular soils elastic settlement is the predominant part of the settlement, whereas in saturated inorganic silts and clays the primary consolidation settlement probably predominates. The secondary consolidation settlement forms the major part of the total settlement in highly organic soils and peats. In this chapter, the procedures for estimating elastic settlement will be discussed in detail. Consolidation settlement calculation procedures will be discussed in Chapter 11.
