ABSTRACT

As mentioned in Chapter 10, the total settlement of a shallow foundation, in general, is the sum of the elastic settlement (Se) and the consolidation settlement (Sc) of the soil supporting the foundation. The procedures for estimating the elastic settlement were treated in Chapter 10. It was also pointed out that the total consolidation settlement is the sum of the settlements occurring from primary consolidation (Sp) and secondary consolidation (Sc). Or
