ABSTRACT
The foundations for studying and designing industrial organisations as socio-technical systems were laid by social scientists at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, London, England. Most of the conceptual framework was developed in the period 1950-1970. Unfortunately, this work seems to have been forgotten today. Yet it is important because it provides a scientifically proven basis for designing work groups that are productive and jobs that are meaningful and satisfying.
