ABSTRACT

It was 11:15 p.m., and the midnight-shift officers were minutes from marking on duty from roll call. Officer Sherry Wilkins went to the service station, took the $10 larceny report, and ran the license plate that the cashier had written down when the driver of an Explorer had taken off without paying. The clerk only wanted the money, believing the driver had simply forgotten to pay. Wilkins called the owner of the Explorer at home and left a message to call the Exxon station as soon as possible.
