ABSTRACT

The majority of patients with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are treated with anticoagulation alone. The objectives of early anticoagulation are to  stop thrombus propagation, minimize the risk of embolization, and minimize the risk of early and late recurrent DVT. The objective of long-term anticoagulation is to reduce recurrence.
