ABSTRACT

A primary concern of citizens in today’s society is crime and justice. Pick up any daily newspaper in the United States and you’ll find multiple stories that report crime in the community and what actions by the police, courts, and corrections were taken. We have become a society that knows violence, and many people are more than just a little fearful of being victimized by others. As a whole, the public reaction to crime has been to introduce and pass more laws. In some circumstances, we have taken a second look at existing laws to see if personal rights and privileges have “handcuffed” the criminal justice system that is entrusted with protecting society from wrongdoers.
