ABSTRACT

Unlike the situation where the design of concrete, steel, or steel-concrete composite construction is concerned, the calculation procedure for timber is simplied. There is no explicit requirement to calculate the temperature distribution within the element as the strength calculation is carried out on a residual section after the depth of charring is removed from the original section. There is also generally no need to consider strength reduction in the residual section as any temperature rise can be considered small and therefore ignored. This chapter considers re design to EN 1995-1-2 and various empirical methods.
