There is always the possibility that the dam you build might experience partial or total failure causing extensive damage downstream. This could result in loss of life, injury to people or livestock, damage to residences, industrial buildings or railways, and interruption to the service of public utilities (for example, electricity). In addition, loss of income resulting from lack of water could make the economic consequences of a dam failure substantial.
