ABSTRACT

In 1950, Deming taught an eight-day course in Japan on statistical quality control (SPC). A written version of the course was compiled and sold to the participants. Deming decided to turn over his royalties to the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE). In his turn, the Director of JUSE decided in 1951 to establish a Deming Prize, in honor of the contribution and friendship of Deming toward Japan and also to boost the growth of total quality control (TQC) in Japan.
