ABSTRACT

Two colleagues, Derek and Johnnie (not their real names), were safety supervisors of a midsize corporation. Both of them had more than 20 years’ experience in this field. Each had supervised and mentored other safety professionals. The mentoring had been done on the job, one-on-one, since the company’s training department had responsibility for all types of training, including safety. When the economy declined, the company decided to eliminate the training department. The safety manager-Derek’s and Johnnie’s boss-informed them that moving forward they would have to provide safety training at all new employee orientations. These meetings were scheduled once a month, with about 30-50 new employees in attendance each time. Derek and Johnnie would take turns to give the safety  training presentation at the meeting. They would become incidental trainers.
