ABSTRACT

An oft-cited quotation by former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger says, “If you don’t know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere.” In everything a person does professionally and personally, the person must know what the aims are in order to achieve them. Training is no different. Trainers must articulate the objectives of the training so that they are clear to the trainers themselves and to the trainees. The objectives may be framed as learning objectives if they relate to transfer of knowledge or, when the expected outcome of the training is improved job skills, they are often framed as performance objectives. In every case they should match the training needs of the audience.
