ABSTRACT

Effective geopolitics requires a confluence of the theoretical and the practical. The former demands that national leaders understand a wide range of issues, including international law, international relations, finance, geography, and military power, particularly its limits. The latter requires the implementation of these distinct disciplines with sensitivity, both to domestic politics and the global community, while recognizing the importance of tactical and strategic issues alike. Although, prima facie, tactical and strategic considerations suggest a dissonance, effective national leaders are able to incorporate both in the decision-making process. See Figure 3.1.
