ABSTRACT

Medical device innovation is often thought of as involving the modification, development or construction of medical devices. It also includes their introduction or application in a new role as part of research and device evaluation, or to support a new or novel clinical technique. Clinical engineers may create, or participate in developing, new medical devices but in a hospital are most likely to be responsible for managing the underlying policies and processes that make sure devices produced by others are used safely and effectively. Their involvement may comprise anything from carrying out acceptance procedures on innovative devices to undertaking in-depth effectiveness evaluations or managing an entire device-orientated research project.
