ABSTRACT

Quay walls consist of elements, all of which are highly important to the overall functionality of the quay. Every structure is only as strong as the weakest link, so it is important to pay close attention to every detail of the main structure. Not only the cost plays a role in this, but also the feasibility of the construction and requirements in relation to accuracy, robustness and design life. In view of the great length of quays, with their many recurring elements, good reproducibility is important. Aspects relating to construction materials are described in Chapter 8.
