ABSTRACT

Leucaena leukocephala (lead tree, jumby bean, white popinac) (Figure 270) is primarily a tree of the tropics, and has become established in Hawaii, Florida, and other Gulf States. It can become an invasive tree, and in some parts of the world is used as a source of forage for livestock because of its high protein content similar to that of alfalfa. Livestock once adapted to grazing the plant are able to degrade mimosine in the rumen and are not subject to poisoning.2
