ABSTRACT

Nations around the globe, including the United States, face a wide range of national safety and security threats. Some of these threats result from naturally occurring events, such as severe weather or earthquakes, that can quickly devastate a community or a region. Other threats are the result of the acts of man, some of which are intentional, such as attacks by radicals, as was witnessed in the attacks of September 11, 2001, whereas other events are accidental, such as the 2010 oil spill along the Mississippi Gulf Coast or the chemical disaster that occurred in Bhopal, India, in 1984.
