ABSTRACT

Neuroprotective therapy is important not only for protecting neurons in the ischemic penumbra but also for protecting the neurovascular unit in the brain. Numerous potential agents have been studied for neuroprotection under ischemic conditions. However, only one free radical scavenger is currently available for clinical use in Japan. In this chapter, we discuss why many neuroprotective agents have failed to obtain clinical efcacy and what future studies should be focused on for achieving favorable results.
