ABSTRACT

The aim of this book is to put the algorithms of computer graphics into a practical setting and make them usable. There can be no better way to do this than by showing how this is done in a comprehensive application program with all the features that one expects to find in a mainstream 3D animation tool. I have chosen to do this by examining the open source application suite called OpenFX.1

It is mature software, having been in continual development for over 10 years. It has a reputation of being robust and very comprehensive, and it has wide range of support materials available on its OpenFX.org website. The code is documented extensively and there are many briefing notes on the OpenFX website, so this chapter aims to act as a description of how all the parts of OpenFX fit together to turn it into a practical modeling, animation and rendering program.
