ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to summarise the most fundamental analytical techniques that are frequently applied to epidemiological data. This is to serve both as a guide to how basic analytical procedures should be used in epidemiology, particularly in written presentations, and as a reference when more advanced, or more subjectspecific, techniques are developed in later chapters. Further details on basic statistical procedures may be found in any of the introductory textbooks with medical applications, such as Altman (1991); Armitage
