ABSTRACT
Ceramics, as a class, tend to be dened by exclusion. The classes of materials called metals on the one hand and polymers on the other hand are easy to determine, both by the predominant interatomic bonding mechanism and by class properties (mechanical, electrical, etc.). Ceramics are primarily those essentially homogeneous materials left out of the previous two classes.
