In general, athletes with an impairment are prone to the same medical issues as able-bodied athletes. However, due to the specific nature of their impairments, these athletes may experience some medical conditions and problems that are not found in able-bodied athletes. For example, spinal cord injuries lead to an impairment or a loss of motor, sensory and vegetative function. Depending on the level and completeness of the spinal cord injury, complications such as autonomic dysreflexia, pressure ulcers or urinary tract infections often occur.
