ABSTRACT

Athletes with an impairment are often very different even within a class. With limited specific scientific information available, some practitioners and coaches may feel ‘out of their depth’ when working with these athletes. Rather than seeing that as a negative, embrace the challenge and be willing to explore. A good grounding in the principles of sports nutrition and in exercise physiology will enable a practitioner to use intuition and experience to support an athlete with an impairment, whether it be someone who is just starting out or an experienced athlete looking to reach the pinnacle of their career. Effective sports nutrition advice that is focussed on performance will help each athlete achieve their own personal goals.
