ABSTRACT

Reduced physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle are risk factors for both excessive weight gain and reduced insulin sensitivity. These risk factors for gestational diabetes are potentially modifiable. Therefore, promoting exercise during pregnancy could reduce the risk of developing gestational diabetes and may be an intervention to be included in the management of women with gestational diabetes.1 Pregnancy may also provide an opportunity to improve lifestyle in the longer term, decreasing the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes for both mother and her child.2
