ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the important steps in setting up a laboratory operation, including planning, staffing, identifying types of equipment and supplies, and the activities necessary to ensure that laboratory equipment performs appropriately. Although several types of laboratories (service, research, education, and/or training laboratories) support forensic DNA operations, they may operate independently or coexist. Table 12.1 provides a brief description of the different types of laboratories supporting forensic DNA profiling operations.
