ABSTRACT

Postmortem functions focus on locating, documenting, examining, and storing human remains. The information in this chapter is presented as a broad overview of body recovery and morgue operations.

After an incident is officially declared a mass fatality by the appropriate entity, the managerial entity will organize and activate a field operations team. Field operations (also known as body recovery) include locating and documenting human remains, as depicted in Figure 3.1. Only after proper documentation should the remains be recovered and transported to designated body processing sites or morgues.
