ABSTRACT

Classification of aberrant behavior ETIOLOGIC CONSIDERATIONS Classification of behavioral abnormalities is shown in Table 7. As has been indicated previously, the definition of aberrant behavior also includes behavioral patterns, which occur as a side effect of various diseases. Injuries of the musculoskeletal apparatus, for example fractures of bones of an extremity, can lead to altered behavior. The horse will in this case show pain in the form of lameness. Although this behavioral reaction provides relief and will contribute to healing, it also must be considered aberrant behavior according to the definition, and has to be classified as a symptomatic behavioral aberration (category 1) (70). Altered behavioral patterns, which almost inevitably occur with infectious diseases of the central nervous system (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), rabies, and so on), also have to be classified in this category.
