ABSTRACT

Description. As classical flight animals, horses mainly rest in a standing position. It is therefore natural if a horse spends a very short time per day lying down and that it only occupies about 10% of the 24-hour day. Adult horses only spend about 20 minutes per day or less in lateral recumbency. It is also natural for adult horses to lie down only if their need for security is satisfied. Aberrant behavior, on the other hand, exists if a horse does not lie down at all for an extended period.
