ABSTRACT

In centrifugation, centrifugal force is used in the place of gravitational force for separation. The centrifugal force provides far greater rates of separation. In the centrifuge, the fluid is introduced on some form of rotating vessel and is rapidly accelerated. The relative motion between fluids separates different materials. Centrifugation is used for separating particles on the basis of their size or density, separating immiscible liquids of different densities, filtration of a suspension, breaking down of emulsions and colloidal suspensions, or for separation of gases, e.g., isotope separation in nuclear industry.
