ABSTRACT

Fairtrade is a trading partnership that aims for sustainable development of excluded and disadvantaged producers, seeking greater equity in international trade by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of marginalised producers and workers, especially in the southern hemisphere. Fairtrade organisations (backed by consumers) are actively engaged in supporting producers, raising awareness and campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade, with regulated terms of trade which ensure that farmers and workers in some of the poorest countries in the world are adequately protected and can build a more sustainable future (Fairtrade Federation 1999; EFTA 2005; FLO 2006).
