ABSTRACT

Balsams are resinous mixtures that contain large proportions of benzoic or cinnamic acid, or both, or esters of these acids. The medicinally-sed balsams include Peru balsam. Tolu balsam, styrax, and benzoin. Benzoic acid may be readily sublimed from balsam of Peru, balsam of tolu, and benzoin. Cinnamic acid is readily sublimed from balsam of Peru, balsam of tolu, styrax, and Sumatra benzoin.
