ABSTRACT

The nucleic acids are slightly soluble in cold water, more readily soluble in hot water, and easily soluble in dilute alkali with the production of salts from which they can be separated by acids.

The experiments in this section include the isolation of RNA from baker’s yeast and also the preparation of a cyclic nucleotide using sodium chloride. The method we will use in this experiment involves the direct extraction of yeast cells with phenol. The cells are not broken, and their walls permit the passage of RNA of low molecular weight into the extracting liquid.
