ABSTRACT

Enzymes are chemically proteins but have special catalytic properties to propel reactions in biological systems. By general agreement, their names end in “ase.” One of several classifications of enzymes follows:

1. Esterases 2. Proteinases 3. Amidases 4. Phosphorylases 5. Carbohydrases 6. Oxidases

Enzymes are, for the most part, soluble in water and in dilute alcohol. They are temperature sensitive and are most active in the body (37°C-38°C temperatures). Their optimum pH activity is near neutrality (7.0).
