ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses basic instrumentation aspects as they relate to the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner and its functionality. These include the magnet and the various designs, matters on field homogeneity, stability, shimming, and the fringe field, gradient coils and radio frequency (RF) coils and their designs, other electronics (transmitters, receivers), and decoupling schemes. A general overview of the scanner and its auxiliary systems is shown in Figure 7.1.
