ABSTRACT

The metabolism converts biological material into energy or produces the building blocks needed to construct biological structures, maintain cells or carry out various cellular functions; see, e.g., [135] for a systems biology approach. It is impossible to give a simple overview of the properties of metabolic pathways; here, we illustrate briefly very simple models which aim at showing how one can get insight on such complicated processes using mathematical modelling. Deterministic models are of current use to study complex metabolic networks; see, e.g., [154], [141], [82] or [166], and the references therein. We focus here on examples of stochastic models.
