ABSTRACT
In 2009, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, omas Steitz, and Ada Yonath for their studies on the structure and function of the ribosome. e ribosome is among the biggest known molecular machines, made up of three RNA components (in prokaryotes the 23S, 16S, and 5S rRNA) and many proteins. e RNA consists of the four basic ribonucleotides and a few modied nucleotides that ne-tune the ribosomal function.
