ABSTRACT

The realization of the plant life strategy is related to the formation of protective and adaptive mechanisms that are responsible for the functional plasticity and efcient usage of environmental resources (Bazzaz 1996; Larcher 2003). Taking this into consideration, rhizomatous plant species are of special interest. These plant species easily grow in different botanic-geographic zones. The formation of plant rhizomes is an important adaptive sign, which has been formed during the evolution and is nothing else but the adaptation to the cold and dry climates. Rhizomes provide vegetative reproduction, dissemination, and overwintering of perennial grasses. The underground shoot complex forms the vegetative meristematic fund of buds and is characterized by its own mechanisms of growth regulation and growth orientation (Markarov and Golovko 1995; Maslova 2001; Maslova et al. 2005).
