ABSTRACT
The steam engine derives from the conuence of two totally separate issues, which will appear at rst to be completely unrelated to each other and furthermore even completely unrelated to the steam engine. One was the problem how to remove underground water that had seeped into mines. The other, to be discussed in Chapter 11, is the work of the early scientists studying the properties and behavior of gases.
