The decedent’s clothing can also be a good source of foreign DNA. An assailant may grab or rub the decedent’s clothing, causing epithelial cells to be trapped there. Turnedout pants pockets have proven to be an excellent source of foreign DNA from decedent clothing. High levels of foreign DNA have been found in approximately 82% of every pocket swabbing tested-earning such turned-out pockets the moniker “hot pockets.” Pockets produce profiles ranging from a few alleles below threshold to profiles that meet eligibility requirements for the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) to complete DNA profiles (Moser, 2013).
