ABSTRACT

For the Marico copra buying team consisting of Sasi and Jayanth, the visit to Ranganathan’s house was an important milestone. e immediate need for the visit was to understand the special requirements of farmer-converters. For example, at noon, Jayanth had accepted the bid placed by Ranganathan and had specied the acceptance quantity as 7.5 tons while all other successful bidders were allocated

in multiples of 10 tons. To a casual observer it might have seemed that Jayanth had discriminated against Ranganathan. In reality, the buying team made it a point to accept all reasonable bids placed by Ranganathan. Every such order was for 7.5 tons as the buying team knew that Ranganathan owned a modied tractor of 7.5 tons capacity. Other traders typically used hired trucks of 10 tons capacity.
