ABSTRACT

There are three equally important pillars of the successful metalworking «uid (hereafter MWF) application:(1)selectionoftheproperMWF,(2)deliveryofthisMWFintopointofapplication,and (3)MWFmaintenance.TheproperphysicaldeliveryofMWFstothemachiningzoneisoneofthe mostimportantofsuccessfulMWFapplication(Springborn1967)because,unlessMWFisdeliveredwiththeparametersneededandcarefullyplaced,itcannotperformitsfunctions.Unfortunately, this is still one of the most neglected aspects of proper MWF application in many practical manufacturingoperationsandparticularlyindrillingoperations.Thisisbecausethemodernbookson theMWF(Byers1994;Byers2006)aswellastheknownbooksondrillingtooldesign/applications donotconsiderthisaspect.ThischapteraimstoprovidethebasicguidelinesfortheproperMWF deliveryandapplicationindrillingwithemphasisonHPdrillingwhileessentialparametersof MWF to be maintained as important to drills performance are also addressed.
