ABSTRACT

Where our safety and health efforts fail, there is often an injury or illness incurred by our employees. Work-related injuries and illnesses, in addition to the pain and suffering by the injured or ill employee, cost organizations money. The goal of the safety and health professional is to eliminate or minimize the potential risks in the workplace in order to avoid the potential hazards that can result in workplace injuries and illnesses. The reason most organizations employ a safety and health professional on staff is primarily and fundamentally because work-related injuries and illnesses cost the organization money. If there was not a monetary cost correlated to work-related injuries and illnesses, many organizations would simply marginalize the compliance and related requirements and align safety and health responsibilities within another organizational function.
